Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Red 4k Digital Cinema?
A: An integrated system of cameras and equipment from the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company. Their first camera, the Red One, provides image quality that rivals 35mm film in a tapeless digital format: with 4k resolution, 35mm depth-of-field, and extended dynamic range not found in HD video-based systems. The cameras have been used by such filmmaking luminaries as Peter Jackson and Steven Soderbergh, who has shot two feature films with the Red One so far. More info is available at www.red.com
Q: What is RedConnector?
A: RedConnector is the community resource for finding owner-operators of the revolutionary new digital cinema cameras and equipment from Red, Inc. You won't find an easier way to mine the growing pool of experienced Red shooters and camera techs anywhere else.
Q: Why are you giving away a camera package?
A: To get the word out about Red and RedConnector. Also, because we want to get the technology into the hands of the most talented new filmmakers out there, and see what they can do with it.
Q: The rules say, "Submissions will be judged both on the quality of the screenplay and on the viability / development of the production." What does that mean?
A: It means that a great film idea is only great if you turn it into a great film. We can only provide the camera package. We're counting on you to do the rest, and unlike other competitions, we'll consider any supporting material you can give us. Show us that you're serious about your film.
Q: That's pretty cool.
A: That's not a question - but thanks.
Competition Rules
Submissions:
- Screenplays may be of any length. RedConnector believes a film should be as long or as short as it needs to be. Select your category based on the projected running time of the completed film: Short Form = less than 30min, Long Form = 30min and up.
- Submissions will be judged both on the quality of the screenplay and on the viability / development of the production. In other words, if you've got your budget in place, specific producers / actors / crew already "attached," or music / location rights locked in, let us know!
- We encourage you to include concept art, storyboards, and other supplementary materials. We prefer that these materials be submitted electronically. If you wish to submit supplemetary materials by mail, please contact us by email. Note that submission materials will NOT be returned - no exceptions.
- Screenplays may be written in any language, but must include an English translation.
- Receipt of materials and all other correspondence will be acknolwedged via email. *Make sure to include your email address with your submission.*
- Payment of submission fees is online via credit card ONLY. No checks, money orders, bags full of pennies, or other forms of payment will be accepted.
- There is no limit to the number of entries you may make, in either or both categories, but each screenplay requires a separate entry form and submission fee.
- It is the responsibility of the screenwriter to ensure that their work is protected via copyright registration. However, RedConnector will not share your work with anyone not directly associated with the Competition, and all submission materials will be destroyed subsequent to the Competition.
- All decisions by RedConnector staff, including judging decisions, are final. We reserve the right not to declare a winner in a particular category if no entries in that category meet minimum quality standards. (But that would be pretty depressing.)
- All competition entrants will be asked to agree to the Terms of Submission, and must be at least years of age, with the full power and authority to enter into that agreement. (Boring, but our laywer says we need to cover our butts.)
- Finalists will be contacted by October 31, 2008 for a short interview about their creative vision and production plans / status. Winners will be selected from the Finalist pool, and announced by November 15, 2008.
Grand Prize:
- One Grand Prize winner in each category will receive a full Red One based camera package to shoot their film.
- Camera package consists of a Red One Digital Cinema Camera and associated accessories. All other filmmaking equipment is the responsibility of the filmmaker.
- A member of the RedConnector staff will accompany the equipment, and act as technical advisor / D.I.T. There is no charge for this service - however, transportation / travel costs in excess of $500 are the responsibility of the winning productions.
- Shooting schedule is limited to 5 days for Short Form, and 15 days for Long Form. If your shoot exceeds these limits, you may negotiate with the package provider for an extension.
- Shooting dates will be negotiated between RedConnector and the winning productions in good faith.
- The winning films must agree to accord appropriate screen credit to RedConnector and the RedConnector technical advisor in order to receive the Grand Prize package.
- Prize packages must be used within nine months of award date, unless specifically granted a waiver by RedConnector. (If your shoot gets postponed by a month, we're not going to hassle you - but if you don't plan on shooting before next year's Competition, you should hold your submission until then.)
Participation in the RedConnector Filmmaker Competition implies understanding and acceptance of all of the above rules, as well as the Terms of Submission.
